SARAH FEATHERSTONE

SARAH FEATHERSTONE studied architecture at Kingston University, The Architectural Association and The Bartlett, UCL. Prior to setting up Featherstone Associates, Sarah was one of two partners at the award winning practice, Hudson Featherstone Architects. She has been intrinsic in the design and implementation of all projects, ranging from private new build houses to mixed use projects such as Peckham Square and Tabernacle Street. Arts and educational projects included the Verulamium Museum, St Albans Museum and the Medical Research Council. Sarah has lived and worked in East London area for the last twelve years. She helped initiate its regeneration through many of her earlier collaborative projects which involved both design and entrepreneurial skills to execute a series of cafes, nightclubs and apartments. Sarah has taught at Chelsea School of Art and has been a visiting critic at UCL, RCA, Cambridge and East London University. She is a Member of the Public Arts Forum and a Civic Trust Award Assessor. Featherstone Associates was launched in 2002 and builds on the strength and success of Sarah Featherstone’s previous award-winning practice, Hudson Featherstone. The practice offers a distinctive and innovative approach to the design of residential, urban regeneration, education and arts and leisure projects combined with the boldness and expertise to make them happen. Underpinning the practice’s work across these sectors is a commitment to working with informed clients to ensure that design brings value in the widest sense – socially, culturally and economically.
How does diversity reveal itself in your work? Diversity is subtle in our work - we do not have an obvious style. We create spaces which respond to specific contexts and offer a range of possibilities to different people.
How does working in a multi-cultural city inspire you? I am inspired by the tightness and extremes found within a few walking steps.
Who are your role models? No one person - my role models are people who are committed, passionate and quirky.
What advice would you give to someone wishing to become an architect? Think out of the box.
